PURPOSE:To eliminate obstacle for starting or running a vehicle by appropriately setting the initial gear step in a manual speed change mode even when the manual speed change mode is set by skipping an automatic speed change mode due to the failure in a speed change mode switch. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission connected to an engine is provided with a plurality of gear steps, and automatic as well as manual speed change modes can be set. It is detected by a manual mode detection means that the manual speed change mode is set by a shift operation means, while the manual speed change operation is detected by a manual speed change operation detection means in the manual speed change mode. The operation position of the shift operation means is detected by the operation position detection means. When it is detected that the manual speed change mode is directly set from range positions other than a traveling range by skipping the setting of the automatic speed change mode, the gear step of the automatic transmission is switched by a speed change control means according to a predetermined diagram of speed change line until the manual speed change operation is detected.
