PURPOSE:To increase the transmittance of light and to sufficiently enhance the brightness of display by coloring transmitted light without using color filters. CONSTITUTION:A pair of polarizing plates 41, 42 are arranged by holding a liquid crystal cell 30 consisting of homogeneously oriented liquid crystal molecules therein and a phase plate 40 is arranged between the liquid crystal cell 30 and the upper polarizing plate 41. The values of retardation of the phase plate 40 and the liquid crystal cell 30 are varied from each other and the delay phase axis of the phase plate 40 and the liquid crystal molecule orientation direction of the liquid crystal cell 30 are nearly paralleled or nearly orthogonally intersected with each other. The transmission axes of a pair of the polarizing plates 41, 42 are diagonally shifted by a prescribed angle from the delay phase axis of the phase plate 40. |
