The invention relates to a device for cleaning (purifying) the exhaust gases of a heat engine, commonly known as a "catalytic converter". The device comprises a catalyst support formed of a stack of flat metal sheets (12) coated with at least one catalyst and held in the form of a block (22) by a bundle of elongate elements (16) extending in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the sheets and passing through holes (14) made in the latter, at least one lateral insulating plate (34) formed of a thermal and/or sound insulating material being applied to one lateral face (24) of the block which extends perpendicularly to the plane of the sheets (12).
