A method and apparatus for removing atmospheric pollutants and for producing carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrochloric acid (HC1) from effuent gas streams. The gas is first subjected to cryogenic refrigeration (73) to remove many of the atmospheric pollutants as liquids, and the residual, cold gas stream (120) is then passed into a centrifuge (40) wherein the gas expands so that the gaseous CO2 is frozen, occluding therein the particulate solids, and the gaseous HC1 and nitrogen, oxygen, and miscellaneous gases are liquified, the frozen CO2 and liquids being separated by centrifugal force. The frozen CO2 is moved through the centrifuge, to discharge, against the resistance caused by the centrifugal force by means of a conveying screw (72, 74). The discharged frozen CO2 is preferably then moved to a heated rotary kiln (8), wherein the frozen CO2 is melted to release the occluded particulate matter.
|
