PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN-CONTAINING ORGANIC COMPOUND

PURPOSE:To carry out the hydrogenative dechlorination of an organic halide while keeping the catalytic activity over a long period. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen-containing organic compound such as chloroform is produced by the hydrogenative dechlorination of an organic halide such as carbon tetrachloride with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing a reducing metal supported on carbon carrier. The catalyst to be used in the above process is produced by supporting a group 8 metal of the periodic table on a carrier composed of carbon treated by contacting with a reducing agent (e.g. hydrogen), an oxidizing agent (e.g. nitric acid) and an organic halide (e.g. carbon tetrachloride).
