PURPOSE:To detect an ink residual amt. so as to be capable of using ink to the utmost limit without lowering the life of a recording head and suddenly stopping recording in an ink jet recording apparatus. CONSTITUTION:In an ink jet recording apparatus equipped with an energy generating element 19 generating energy utilized in order to emit ink from an ink emitting orifice 15 and a liquid chamber 17 storing the ink supplied to the emitting orifice 15, the sonic wave generating means 20 and a sonic wave detection means 40 are provided and the sonic wave generated by a sonic wave generating means 20 is detected by the sonic wave detection means 40 and the presence of the ink in the liquid chamber is detected on the basis of the detected sonic wave. |
