PURPOSE:To remove residual toner, a toner filming layer or the like by an optimum condition by comparing the detected value of surface potential with a reference value and removing the toner filming layer formed on a carrier based on the compared result. CONSTITUTION:An insulating contact member is constituted of a roller body (roller) 19 consisting of a rotatable and insulating body. The roller 19 is constituted so as to be freely brought into contact with an intermediate transfer belt 15. It is assumed that the detected potential value by a surface potential detection device 21 just after the belt 15 and the roller 19 are separated is defined as V0 and the previously set reference value is defined as Vs. When the detected value V0 becomes equal to or under the reference value Vs, it is detected by a surface state detection means based on the compared result from a comparison means that the toner filming layer is formed on the belt 15. Based on the output thereof, a toner filming removing member 24 abuts on the belt 15 while rotating, and the toner filming layer is removed. |
