The system described has a surface (3) for the document or picture, a scanning unit (A) for the document, an output unit (B) for supplying the picture information obtained, and a unit for recognising the format of the document. A mode selection unit (200) selects either a first mode in which the scanning unit scans two documents or a second mode which scans only one document. There is also a control unit which, in the case of the first mode, controls the output unit so that the information received during the scan is divided into two sets depending on the format. One of the two sets is supplied on a different sheet or another sheet.
