Articles, such as diaphragms or spacers for electric batteries, of moulded porous ebonite are produced by mixing comminuted vulcanized rubber, e.g. soft rubber, with an aqueous colloidal solution or dispersion of sulphur and, after moulding, subjecting the moulded product to heat, which causes further vulcanization and evaporation of the water. In the example, 27 pounds of vulcanized soft rubber containing 10-15 parts of sulphur to 100 of rubber are comminuted and mixed with 1/2 gallon of water containing a wetting agent and 8 pounds of sulphur. The mixture is put into moulds and vulcanized at 140 DEG C., preferably in steam. The product should preferably have a sulphur content of 32 per cent. |
