The waste gases of a furnace installation pass through the smoke pipe (9) into the masonry chimney (8). In order to prevent the aggressive vapours contained in the waste gases condensing on the chimney walls or in order at least to keep the quantity of condensate being deposited as small as possible, fresh air is supplied to the chimney by the blower (3) and the dew point of the waste gases is thus lowered. The blower can also run after the furnace has been switched off in order rapidly to dry out any condensate which may have formed. <IMAGE>
