The invention relates to a process for coating surfaces with soot by means of substoichiometric combustion of fuel gas, in particular of acetylene, which combustion impinges the surface in question, the fuel gas and an oxygen gas being suitably fed to the combustion site via a burner having an associated burner head. The process in question is characterised in that a substantially closed chamber is formed between the surface to be coated with soot and the fuel gas feed or the burner head by means of appropriately arranged shielding surfaces and, for a soot-coating operation in this chamber, a suitable amount of a suitable mixture of fuel gas and oxygen gas (= fuel gas mixture) is introduced and ignited.
