The releasability of diamond coatings produced by chemical vapor deposition is improved by employing as a substrate an alloy of a hydride-forming metal, preferably niobium, said alloy having a hardness on the Rockwell B scale of at least about 50. Alloys of niobium and titanium or zirconium, particularly niobium-titanium alloys comprising about 40-50 % (by weight) titanium, are preferred. |
