PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the subject compound excellent in optical purity and useful as a synthetic raw material for medicines and agrochemicals and optically resolving agents, etc., in high yield by reacting a specific microorganism, etc., with a specific nitrile, etc., in an aqueous medium having neutrality, etc. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism belonging to the genus Rhodococcus [e.g. HT strain 29-7 (FELM P-3857)], the genus Alcaligenes [e.g. strain BC35-2 (FELM P-3318)] or the genus Brevibacterium or Pseudomonas [e.g. strain BC-18 (FERM P-13835)] and having ability capable of subjecting a nitrile group of alpha- hydroxynitrile of racemic body of formula I [X is H, OH 1-3C alkyl, halogen, phenyl, phenoxy, amino or nitro; (n) is 1 or 2] or a treated material thereof to asymmetric hydrolysis is made to act on the nitrile of formula I which is a substrate or a mixture of an aldehyde corresponding to the nitrile and prussic acid in an aqueous medium having about neutrality or basicity to provide the objective compound of formula II. |
