PURPOSE:To obtain the subject polyester composition containing a thermoplastic polyester and inorganic fine particles coated with a zirconium compound and giving a film having high abrasion resistance and scratch resistance and useful for magnetic recording medium, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyester composition useful for film for magnetic recording medium, etc., having excellent abrasion resistance and scratch resistance is composed of a thermoplastic polyester (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) containing inorganic fine particles coated with a zirconium compound. The composition is produced by adding magnesium acetate, etc., as a catalyst to dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, carrying out ester interchange reaction under heating, incorporating the reaction product with an ethylene glycol slurry of inorganic fine particles (e.g. silica particles) coated with a zirconium compound (e.g. zirconia), antimony trioxide as a catalyst and trimethyl phosphate as a heat stabilizer and subjecting to polycondensation reaction by heating under reduced pressure. |
