Gas generator for an airbag

A gas generator (1) which can be used in a versatile fashion and is small in size can be produced in an inexpensive manner. In order to achieve this, the gas generator (1) is essentially composed of a cylindrical container (2) having a granular charge (3), spacing elements (27, 30), a low pressure chamber (29), a filter (25) and holding elements (8, 9). The container (2) serves as a high-pressure chamber. The gas-generating charge (3) is burnt off at a very low pressure. The pressure curve as the gas-generating charge (3) is burnt off is regulated solely by the gas bores (20). The filter (25) is used for fine adjustment of the pressure curve. This is carried out by means of appropriate choice of the mesh shape and thickness of the material used. <IMAGE>
