The invention relates to a machine for grinding rails of a railway track. This machine is of the type comprising a main chassis and at least one grinding module comprising at least one chassis (5) supported by two wheels bearing on the same rail (2) and mounted on the main chassis, at least one grinding unit provided with a grinding head (12) and with a motor for rotationally driving the grinder (14) of this head, a device for supporting the grinding head, which device is articulated to the said module chassis (5) so that it can pivot about the rail (2) in a plane perpendicular to this rail and a device (23) for controlling the angular positioning of the grinding head. The machine is characterised in that it comprises a device for avoiding obstacles by moving the grinding head (12) in translation after angularly positioning this head in its pivotal plane. The invention can be used for grinding the rails of a railway track. <IMAGE>
