The invention relates to an electrically heated water heater, in particular a flow heater, having an automatically responding safety device (50, 54, 58) which interrupts the mains supply of the apparatus when the pressure or the temperature of the heated water in the apparatus reaches a predeterminable limit value, and furthermore having a device, to be operated by the user, for step-by-step setting of the heating power (18, 10) of the apparatus. It is proposed that the device for setting the heating power (18, 20) and the automatically responding safety device (50, 54, 58) be jointly assigned a single switch combination (12, 14, 16) and that the two devices be coupled, acting independently of one another, to the switch combination (12, 14, 16). The arrangement according to the invention has the advantage that a single switch combination is required for the safety device and the device for setting the heating power and that the switching mechanism can be constructed in a simple and functionally reliable manner. <IMAGE>
