<p>An indexing rotary actuator is provided for unidirectionally rotating an output shaft (12) through a specific angle per each indexing operation accurately without cumulative error. Clutch pistons (24, 25) are provided within a clutch piston chamber (C1, C4) slidably supported along an output shaft (12) within the clutch piston chamber (C1, C4). Main pistons (15, 16) are rotatable about an annular main piston chamber (14). Opposing faces of piston mounting rings (20, 21) include respective raised arcuate sectors (22, 23), which cooperate to limit rotation of the main pistons (15, 16) through the specified angle per each indexing operation, thus limiting rotation of the output shaft (12). Application of pressurized air or fluid serves to drive the main pistons (15, 16) and to drive the clutch pistons (24, 25) along the output shaft (12). The clutch pistons (24, 25) are therefore alternately engaged with the output shaft (12), thus alternately translating rotation energy of the main pistons (15, 16) to the output shaft (12).</p> |
