Method and device for bringing about gentle and correctly timed deceleration or stopping with an automatic train control system

A method and a device relate to a high speed and simultaneously gentle deceleration or stopping of a train by means of a control using a system for automatic train control (ATC). According to the automatic train control, a permissible maximum speed in the form of a "condition of automatic train control" is provided for the actuation of the brake system of a train if this speed is exceeded. If a change in the speed of the train is necessary, a central control determines a feed-in section for which the condition of automatic train control is modified. Then, a message relating to the change in the condition of the automatic train control is fed to a substation which corresponds to the specific feed-in section. The message contains the imminent reduction in speed. As a function of this, the substation decelerates the train without using the automatic train control brake system provided in the train. If the train is subsequently braked to a sufficient degree that the change in the condition of the automatic train control does not bring about any activation of the brake system of the automatic train control, the change in the condition of the automatic train control has been effected.
