A device is created for decreasing water hardness, having a filter device (1) which can be connected on the intake side to a feed line (6) and on the outlet side to a consumer position (3). In order that the water hardness can be decreased without addition of salts or other active compounds, a nanofiltration membrane (8) is provided between inlet and outlet (2, 4) of the filter device (1). The space (7) of the filter device (1) situated on the inlet side of the nanofiltration membrane (8) is connected to a return line (9) which opens out into the feed line (6).
