PURPOSE:To obtain active carbon fiber having a large specific surface area so as to be comparable to that of carbon fiber obtained from optically isotropic pitch and high fiber strength. CONSTITUTION:This optically isotropic pitch-based active carbon fiber is produced by melt mixing (A) 100 pts.wt. optically isotropic pitch, prepared by heat-treating pitch while blowing an oxygen-containing gas thereinto and having 230-300 deg.C softening point with (B) 10-50 pts.wt. optically isotropic pitch, obtained by polymerizing naphthalene in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and having 200-270 deg.C softening point, then spinning the resultant mixture, infusibilizing the spun fiber and subjecting the infusibilized fiber to activating treatment The resultant active carbon fiber contains the optically anisotropic part and has a double structure in which the surface layer part of the obtained active carbon fiber manifests the optical isotropy and the interior thereof manifests the optical anisotropy. |
