The object of the invention is to develop a method and a device for reducing sheet trailing, which allow the sheet to be kept taut right into the nip. The invention consists in that a controllable tension is exerted on the sheet (14) held in a gripper system as a function of the rotary angle of the rubber-covered cylinder, the circumferential speed of the sheet (14), held on the impression cylinder (1) with gripper engagement, being set to be greater than or equal to the circumferential speed of the sheet (14) in the nip, and the circumferential speed being set to a virtually constant value over a defined angular range.
