PURPOSE:To shorten a time that has elapsed till a discharge lamp starts lighting since a power supply was inputted, as much as possible by starting the discharge lamp so as to be lighted with an ignitor quickly operated after the power supply was inputted. CONSTITUTION:An OR circuit OR1 is interposed between a switch S3 and a D flipflop DFF in a control circuit CR' within a first control circuit CR, and let the OR circuit OR, take the logic sum of the output of a timer circuit TM responding to the input of a power supply switch SW1 and the output of the switch S3. The timer circuit TM keeps applying its output to the D flipflop DFF in stead of the output of the switch 33 until voltage between both the ends of a capacitor C1 comes up to a specified value. After the definite period of time has elapsed since the power supply switch SW1 was turned on, the output of the switch S3 is supplied to the D flipflop DFF.
