The invention relates to a method of testing hydraulically driven lift installations with a fine-travelling and a normal-travelling stage, a hydraulic fluid being delivered from a hydraulic unit through a pressure line to pistons moving a car and fed through a return line to a tank, the delivery of hydraulic fluid being obstructed and a working pressure which then results being measured, while the hydraulic unit continues to be operated in the fine-travelling stage, as well as an apparatus for carrying out the method.
