A compensation system for the suspension movements of the wheels of a vehicle contains a coupling arrangement which, when one wheel experiences spring compression, permits the wheel lying directly or diagonally opposite to rebound. For this purpose, a deflection gear is provided on each wheel, the said deflection gear converting the vertical movement of the wheel suspension into a horizontal movement which is transmitted, preferably by means of a shock absorber, to a corresponding deflection gear on the opposite wheel. The latter converts the transmitted horizontal movement back into a vertical movement which acts on the radius rod of the wheel there. The system functions in both directions. The deflection gear is constructed in such a way that the horizontal movement becomes a purely linear movement without an arcuate component, that is to say the central axis of the shock absorber does not change its position. A hydraulic chamber which is provided at one end of the shock absorber and has a piston permits, by means of the adjustment of its pressure, the length of the shock absorber which connects the two deflection gears to change in order to adjust the ground clearance of the vehicle.
