PURPOSE: To compensate the artificial fixation or variation of a dark signal and reduce the noise added by alternately conducting and interrupting the flow of light to a photoelectric converting device. CONSTITUTION: A diffracting grating 219 disperses the characteristic spectral line of a sample material to the sensor element and array of a photoelectric converting device 207. A digital processor 221 controls a switch 223, and activates a laser 203 by conducting the flow of power from a power source 225 to the laser 203 to generate a laser beam. The generation of light by the laser 203 is inhibited by interrupting the flow of power. The device 207 generates the assembly of dark signal values based on only dark signal. An A/D converter 227 digitizes a mixed signal. The processor 221, which is subjected to a proper programming, subtracts a filtered dark signal value subjected from the digitized mixed signal to provide a corrected signal value.
