An apparatus for the preparation of a beverage, which apparatus comprises a plunger (1) adapted to fit tightly into a receptacle for the preparation of the beverage and a water-permeable beverage package (8) containing one or more beverage preparation ingredients attached to the plunger (1), the plunger (1) comprising a handle (2) and a plunger body (3) attached to the handle, the plunger (1) being provided with means for the attachment of the said beverage package thereto.
