A plain bearing member comprises a metallic backing layer and an antifriction layer of a nearly homogeneous aluminium alloy of 1 to 3% by weight of nickel, 0.5 to 2.5% by weight of manganese, 0 to 2% by weight of lead and the remainder aluminium. Hard particles existing in this antifriction layer have essentially particle sizes less than or equal to 5 mu m. Larger hard particles are present only in small numbers, that is, less than 5 in an element of volume defined by a cube having an edge length of 0.1 mm. The aluminium alloy may be cast and as sheet be roll-bonded as cladding on the backing layer. The aluminium alloy forming the bearing material may also be applied by cathodic sputter coating or by evaporation coating in vacuum. |
