A process and apparatus for producing crystals and crystals resulting from this process are described. The process relates to crystals which contain a host lattice of beta -alumina and, in conducting planes, initially sodium ions. By means of ion exchange, the sodium ions are partially or completely replaced by trivalent ions of rare earths. An essential feature of the process consists in immersing dehydrated Na- beta -Al2O3 crystals in a pure rare earth-X3 melt (X = Cl, Br, or I) and leaving them there at a given process temperature and for a given process time.
