A refuse bag storage system is described for sorting and storing refuse of various types and various volumes in a bag holding structure of a total volume which is substantially less than the total volume of the bags arranged therein side by side if these were to be filled to the limit of their capacity. The system possesses a pair of arms which hold each bag and can be moved apart in order to widen the aperture of the associated bag, and can be moved together in order to narrow the bag aperture. <IMAGE>
