PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for a rubbing treatment and to increase a response speed so that the bistability of the ferroelectric liquid crystal display element is obtd. by forming the liquid crystal oriented film by using the specific silane chemical adsorbent compd. CONSTITUTION:The silane chemical adsorbent compd. expressed by formula I is used. In the formula I, R denotes a 1 to 10C alkyl group or R<1>OCH2- (where, R<1> denotes a 1 to 10C alkyl group); A denotes -CH2O-, -O- or -OCO-; X denotes a functional group expressed by formula II, formula III, formula IV or formula V; Y denotes a functional group expressed by the formula II, the formula III or the formula VI; B denotes-O-or single bond; C* denotes an optically active carbon; m denotes an integer from 2 to 12. The need for the rubbing treatment is eliminated by using the silane-based chemical adsorbent compd. having the spontaneous polarization as the liquid crystal oriented film. Then, the destruction of TFTs by generation of static electricity does not arise and the formation of the oriented film is easy even if the substrate surface is rugged.
