An application device for the application of a layer (16) of a coating compound onto a running material web (1) is described, the said application device having means for guiding the material web (1) through a coating zone (4), an application roll (14) for transferring the layer of coating compound onto the material web and supported rotatably in material-transferring assignment to the moving material web, and means for feeding the coating compound onto the covering surface of the application roll (14). The application roll (14) has allocated to it a grinding unit (27) with a grinding wheel (21), which can be moved parallel to the application roll (14) to be ground on a transverse support (23) installed fixedly in the machine. The grinding unit (27) can be driven into a parking position located to the side of the machine. The integration of the grinding unit (27) into the application device has the advantage that it is always available for grinding the application roll (14) when required, without additional assembly operations being necessary. By this means, a significant increase of the productivity of the application device results. <IMAGE>
