In a hand-held writing instrument with a removable cap (4) for covering the writing tip (3), the cap (4) containing an inner cap (5) which has a sealing seat (18) which can be pressed against a sealing surface (17) of the barrel of the writing instrument, and a resilient locking device (16) which, together with a raised portion (18) of the barrel (1), forms a releasable snap-locking connection, radially extending stop surfaces (19) are provided on the barrel (1) of the writing instrument, against which counter-stop surfaces (20) formed on the cap can be laid in the engaged, closed position of the cap (4). The sections of the stop surfaces (19) and of the counter-stop surfaces (20) are so inclined, relative to a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cap (4), that the cap (4) moves axially as a result of a twisting of the cap (4) relative to the barrel (1), and the locking or snap connection is released. The inner cap (5) is rotatably mounted in the cap (4) in order to facilitate attachment and removal of the cap (4). <IMAGE>
