In order further to develop the known process for assembling a battery, in particular a recombination-type battery, such that damage is avoided when inserting the plate block into the battery housing, the plate block being intended to be pretensioned inside the battery housing, as before, the invention proposes that the plate block be permanently pressed together, with the application of pretensioning, and using a means of compression which can be applied externally, before insertion into the battery housing, and that it be held together in a package. The means of compression may consist of bindings, plastic cassettes or shrink films.
