PURPOSE:To easily produce an optically active secondary alcohol having high optical purity in high efficiency. CONSTITUTION:A ketone compound expressed by the formula R<1>COCH2R<2> (R<1> is alkyl; R<2> is alkoxy, acyl, carboxyl or alkoxycarbonyl) is treated with a microorganism of the genus Candida [e.g. Candida boidinii KK912 (IFO 10574)] or its treated product. The carbonyl group is asymmetrically reduced by the process to obtain the corresponding optically active secondary alcohol in high optical purity and yield. |
