The invention relates to a fax machine which has a response function. According to the invention, the machine has a central processing unit (7) and a pair of memories (8, 9) which cooperate to change a control mode of the machine from a first mode to a second mode if a fax signal is not received from a calling correspondent for a prescribed period of time from reception of the signal in the first control mode, and to transmit a response message to the calling correspondent, the first control mode allowing switching between transmission/reception of voice and transmission/reception of image data, and the second control mode allowing switching between the recording of the voice of a calling correspondent and transmission/reception of image data.
