A chromium-free catalyst for reacting carbon monoxide with steam to give hydrogen and carbon dioxide contains as active combination of substances: (a) 30 to 98 % by weight iron oxide represented by Fe2O3; (b) 0.1 to 20 % by weight copper oxide represented by CuO; (c) 0.1 to 20 % by weight of an oxide of the rare earth metals represented by Me2O3 (in which Me stands for a rare earth metal) and/or zirconium oxide represented by ZrO2; (d) 0.1 to 30 % by weight of at least one oxide of one or several other base metals with an ionic radius from 50 to 72 pm (with the exception of chromium); (e) 0 to 0.1 % by weight of at least one oxide of one or several noble metals from the platinum group; (f) 0 to 30 % by weight barium oxide.
