A bumper includes a bumper bar (1) and mechanical deformation elements (4, 5) arranged between this and longitudinal supports (2, 3) of the vehicle concerned. In order that these do not collapse even after introduction of bending moments through the bumper bar (1), they are provided with laterally opposite local strength reductions (7, 8, 9, 10) which define a perpendicular "bending axis" in the deformation elements (4, 5). These thus have joint properties without the conversion of kinetic energy into deformation work suffering as a result of longitudinal upsetting of the deformation elements (4, 5) (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
