The invention relates to a process for the preparation of N-vinylformamide oligomers by cationic polymerisation of N-vinylformamide in the presence of a Lewis acid or protonic acid. The novel oligomers can be used in a variety of ways where water-soluble polymers are employed, such as in paints, printing inks, adhesives and resin modifiers.
