Packaging apparatus for stacks of compressible articles

A packaging machine having a compressing station contains two compressing jaws which are movable towards one another in order to compress the articles to be packaged. A slide engaging on the rear side of the articles pushes these along a guide track in between the compressing jaws. They are still located in their end region somewhat outside the compressing jaws. A suction box arranged underneath the compressing jaws sucks in air through orifices arranged in its bearing surface, so that the articles adhere to it. As a result of the displacement of the suction box, the articles to be packaged then pass completely in between the compressing jaws.
