Waste air is passed over a mineral substrate from the class of the titanium oxides, which is irradiated by short-wave electromagnetic radiation. Inorganic and organic chemical compounds contained in the waste air are chemically changed by this process in such a way that, when contacted with aqueous media or moist solids in a downstream process step, they can be removed from the air.
