PURPOSE: To obtain a character recognition system with a low error ratio by quantizing the features of plural fine line segments or microsegments constituting a mark by using a several dimensional cell-shaped array or many second- dimensional cell-shaped arrays. CONSTITUTION: A data collecting device 160 supplies data describing a mark to a pre-processor 162 and a sorter 164. The pre-processor 162 maps a marks to be recognized to an array for measuring the features of the microsegments of the mark, and assigns a value to the cell of the array. The sorter 164 classifies the mark based on the evaluation of the data for generating a switching control output. The output of the sorter 164 controls a changeover switch 166. This changeover switch 166 controls which of plural classifiers 168 processes the cell value supplied from the pre-processor 162.
