Fuel is pumped (10) to injectors (105) under the control of a unit (130) responsive to an engine revs. counter (125) and an accelerator pedal position sensor (135).A power controller (145) adjusts the pump setting (115) and exchanges data with a safety device (140) which operates the engine cutout (120) in accordance with the results of plausibility checks on the input signals. Detection of an implausible value instigates an emergency mode whereby engine output is reduced or a standby computer may be switched-in.
