The invention relates to a process for the production of magnetic recording media by dispersing pulverulent, magnetic material in a mixture of solvents, organic polymer binders, dispersants and further customary additives in a stirred ball mill, followed by aftertreatment in a ball mill filled with grinding media, application of the resulting dispersion as a layer on a substrate and subsequent solidification of the layer.
