A sewing machine for automatic embroidery of shirts, handkerchieves and serviettes with e.g. initials, symbols or other motifs, is capable of setting and altering the dimensions of the stitched pattern unit, and the distance between units, as required.The machine can also adjust, on thread breakage during sewing, so that the needle is brought to the position it was in when the thread broke, in order to re-start the sewing operation.The machine of the invention reduces the number of information storage devices, e.g. stencils or paper strips, and consequently, the space required for storage. It is also capable of changing to a second operational mode, in order to remove the work to the position where thread breakage occurred
