摘要 <p>The invention is addressed to the assembly of automobiles and aircraft done with reconfigurable modular and "intelligent" tooling fixtures. Much of the capability of the system is brought by optical or other non-contact sensing means (900, 901) incorporated with the tools to provide information on part location, tooling detail location, and automation which is used in the performance of the work. A preferred version of the invention uses 3-dimensional stereo and/or other electrooptical ranging and feature location sensors (900, 901) to perform measurements of the location of critical features of assembly tools and parts including detecting abnormal features such as missing holes or welds. The computer system (80) associated with the sensors (900, 901) generates a database of part conditions before, during and after a working or assembly function. The database is used to continuously improve the process and feed data to related processes.</p>
