A plant for the production of sintered granular material such as cement, cement-like material and lightweight building materials, with low-grade fuels forming predominantly or entirely the materials to be sintered, comprises a kiln of refractory material open at the outlet end, a grate movable longitudinally in the kiln, an ignition device behind the feed point of material to the grate, means for introducing combustion air through the outlet end of the kiln and for guiding this air substantially parallel, and in countercurrent, to the direction of movement of the grate, and a suction pan extending under the grate from the outlet of the kiln to at least the region below the ignition device. The apparatus of Fig. 1 comprises an endless grate 3 travelling in a kiln 2 on rollers 4 and 5, roller 4 being driven and roller 5 being cooled by water, a hopper 8 for depositing a layer of grains of previously sintered material on the grate, a hopper 7 for supplying the raw material to be treated, a burner 11 for igniting the material, a device 17 for sucking air from the discharge end of the kiln across the material on the grate, downwardly into a pan 12 and thence by way of a pipe 13 to a dust separator 15, the air heated between grate and the roof of the kiln and drawn to the pipe 13 in front of the burner 11 serving to burn the low-grade fuel completely. The apparatus of Fig. 1 further comprises a spiked roller 21 at the outlet of the kiln for crushing the sintered cake, which is then conveyed to a sieve drum 22. The apparatus of Fig. 3 is portable and comprises a tunnel kiln 31 with refractory lining, an endless travelling grate 32, a perforated kiln bottom 33 for air cooling of the grate, a hopper 34 and spreading roller 29 for supplying a layer of raw material to the grate, oil or gas burners or electric heating devices 35 or 38, a device 41 for sucking air from the discharge end 36 of the kiln across the material on the grate, downwardly into a pan 39 and to a dust separator 40. |
