In an inking unit of a rotary printing machine, the object is to allow an ink applicator roller also to run with frictional engagement between an ink distributing cylinder, which moves back and forth in the axial direction, and a plate cylinder in order to transfer ink onto the plate cylinder for two quarter-cylinder-width prints of maximum width and to produce a half-cylinder-wide panorama print of maximum width. In this case, the ink-free zones between the printing sets are smaller than the spacings of the ink-free zones on an ink ductor. According to the invention, this takes place in that the ink applicator roller has annular grooves in its outer surface and is arranged so as to alternate with the ink distributing cylinder of equal axial stroke frequency, but with a shorter stroke length.
