A two stroke engine which increases the volume of air which is adapted to flow through the transfer passages. The engine has a configuration whereby the inlet and outlet ports are superposed at the front of the block thus freeing valuable space at the rear of the block. The space at the rear of the block is used to add a supplementary transfer passage. To further optimize the efficiency of the engine, the engine has a modified piston head adapted, when in its lowermost position, to seal-off the entry ports while leaving open the apertures leading to the entry of the transfer passages. The transfer passages always being unobstructed, the flow of the gases is always unrestrained during their passage from a position underneath the piston to a position inside the combustion chamber. Secondary features include the use of a base surface at the bottom end of the cylinder and of an upstanding block extending integrally from the base surface to minimize turbulence of the flow of gases and thus to further increase the efficiency of the engine.
