A row and column based storage device stores data at multiple density levels. The bulk of the stored data is record data, and is stored at higher density levels to minimize the storage area required. The control information and system parameters are stored at lower density levels for maximum reliability. Lost or damaged record data may be recovered through error correction parity data.
